The Palace on Wheels started as a unique holiday train hauled by a steam engine with its inaugural trip on 26th January 1982. It started to roll on its regular operations from October 1982. A joint effort by Rajasthan Tourism Development Board and Indian Railways, the Palace on Wheels is India's answer to the Orient Express of Europe.
A special heritage tourist train for providing a unique and memorable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan, the Palace on Wheels serves an exotic array of dishes to choose from Continental, Chinese, Indian and Rajasthani cuisine at the 'Maharaja' and 'Maharani' restaurants.
The Maharaja and Maharani restaurants offer seating arranged in groups of twos and fours near the windows. Special emphasis is given on the cuisine of Rajasthan, keeping in mind the essence of the journey.
The bar-lounge of the Palace on Wheels is embellished in period furniture, created especially for this coach. The bar has ample space and choice of soft and alcoholic beverages on offer to keep guests in 'High Spirits'.
